9. Why Portugal?

Question 9 of 108 · Origins

For everyone

The famous question about Portugal, and the underlying question about taxes.

Well, no, I did not come for the taxes. Money is a tool, never an engine.

Two thousand and fifteen, I land in Lisbon with my children. A city in permanent reconstruction: buildings burnt, collapsed, abandoned, and sometimes raised again. That imperfection within beauty took hold of me.

And people were smiling. They were happy. I told myself there was something here.

I came for a city that repairs itself. That is exactly what I do.
