12. Device lending in hotels: from Four Seasons to the four-star room
Oct 08, 2026The advanced guest travels without their devices, and the hotels that lend them to them are today among the most expensive in the world.
Why it matters
At home, they have compression boots, a massage gun, sometimes a heated mat. When travelling, they leave them behind: too heavy, too bulky. They rarely find them at the hotel.
Yet what exists at the very top of the market can be organised in a four-star room. The question is not prestige. It is logistics.
What science establishes
What is known about the devices most often lent. Pneumatic compression boots appear on the device menu cited below. A meta-analysis of 17 studies and 319 participants concludes there is a small to very small benefit on muscle function, and a small to moderate effect on perceived pain. Maia et al., 2024. A second meta-analysis, of moderate certainty, finds no reduction in muscle soreness at 24 hours compared with no intervention. Canez et al., 2025. Established: modest effects, mostly perceived.
We say so from the outset. A device lent in the room is a comfort and a tool, not a treatment.
What is known about hygiene in the room. In 54 rooms across six Canadian hotel chains, coliforms were found on 36 % of the surfaces sampled, including the remote control, the bedspread and the tap. Xu et al., 2015. Established. Any object that passes from guest to guest inherits this problem. A lent device must therefore follow a written procedure, not just a wipe.
What is emerging
The in-room wellness menu. The Four Seasons in Los Angeles publishes a menu of devices delivered to the room: infrared and pulsed electromagnetic field mat, percussion gun, LED mask, compression boots, heated eye-massage glasses, connected bike. Each is charged at 50 to 75 $ per day. Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills, page consulted on 08/10/2026. Emerging: a published precedent, prices as stated by the hotel.
The value of wellness per room. Hotels with a strong wellness component report total revenue per occupied room of 561 $, against 335 $ for those where it is weak, about 67 % more. RLA Global and HotStats, first half of 2025, over 11,000 properties. Emerging: a correlation, not a cause. Factors other than wellness may explain the gap.
What we refuse to say
We do not say that a night with compression boots speeds up recovery or prevents anything. The studies do not show it with certainty.
We do not repeat manufacturers' claims. Their figures are self-reported, and we treat them as such.
We do not say that adding devices will increase revenue per room by 67 %. That figure describes a category of hotels, not the effect of a piece of equipment.
What a hotel can do
Why it is not reserved for luxury. The cost of a device does not depend on the number of stars. A massage gun costs the same in Beverly Hills as near Lisbon. What changes is the price of the night, and therefore the share the supplement represents.
The IO8 lending model. A set of devices selected and tested at the Living Lab. List price: 750 € per device. The guest rents it for 50 € a night, against a card pre-authorisation. The device pays for itself in fifteen nights at list price, in fewer than ten at the volume rate. The pre-authorisation covers breakage and theft; the guest knows this before booking.
Minimum baseline. Two or three devices for the hotel, bookable at reception or online, delivered to the room, collected on departure.
Optimised baseline. One device per longevity room, present from arrival, with the card of the room's readings (see no. 11).
Hygiene rules, written before the first loan. One sheet per device: cleaning and disinfection between each guest, with the compatible product specified by the manufacturer; single-use covers or tips when the device touches the skin; check of charge and condition; a dated seal showing the guest that the device has been prepared; immediate withdrawal of any damaged device. A register records every loan.
The target. A device that arrives clean, charged, explained, and that earns more than it costs from the second fortnight of nights onwards.
What the Living Lab measures
Measurement planned. The Living Lab, near Lisbon, is being equipped in waves. For each device, we will record the preparation time between two uses, the cost of consumables per loan, battery life and observed wear. These dated readings will be published here.
These are the figures a hotel director asks for before signing. We want to have measured them ourselves.
